Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth, England, has warned Catholics that they cannot ordinarily fulfil their Sunday obligation by attending Mass celebrated by priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X. He is one of the most conservative voices in the English hierarchy. Monsignor Egan told TheCatholicHerald.com on March 11 that recent popes reached out to members of the FSSPX: “As the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X is in an irregular or impaired situation with the Roman Catholic Church at the moment, its priests do not have the explicit faculties from the Ordinary to celebrate the Mass,” he believes. Bishop Egan referred to Canon 1248 §1, which states that the Sunday obligation is fulfilled when a Catholic attends "a Mass celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite.” In 2019, Bishop Egan visited St Michael’s School in Burghclere, an institution run by the FSSPX.
