Armenian leaders from Nagorno-Karabakh have criticized the Vatican for remaining silent about the destruction of Armenian Christian heritage and the forced displacement of Armenians after Azerbaijan's takeover of the region in 2023. The Roman rite is "not an attack on the unity of the Church," Cardinal François-Xavier Bustillo, 57, of Ajaccio, France, told Italian daily Il Giornale on June 29. "The Church also has the Eastern rites, and even in the West we have many rites: I am thinking of the Ambrosian Rite, the Mozarabic Rite, or the Spanish Rite," the Spanish-born cardinal added. In his view, the difficulty arises only when "the search for greater radicality turns into rigidity". However, Cardinal Bustillo opposes the reversion of Traditionis Custodes.
