French priest Father Matthieu Salenave was detained for 36 hours after blessing an 11th-century church reportedly facing demolition in western France. Salenave, a former member of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) and now reportedly linked to the traditionalist “Resistance” movement
Salenave said he was sprinkling holy water on St. Gault Church in Quelaines-Saint-Gault, Mayenne, when the mayor ordered him to leave. Police later arrested him at his priory, accusing him of violence against an elected official — a charge he denies.
The church is among thousands of historic sites at risk of destruction. A petition with more than 32,000 signatures is urging the government to preserve abandoned churches under President Emmanuel Macron’s 2023 “Church Plan,” though critics say some municipalities continue demolitions without consequence.
